Rilke, a doctor from Europe, embodies a typical Western model of happiness and success. She is educated, confident, determined and committed. We see Rike's everyday life, as an emergency doctor, before she fulfills a long-held dream and sails out to sea alone in her sailing boat. Her goal: Ascension Island in the Atlantic Ocean. But her dream holiday is quickly broken off on the high seas, when, after a storm, she finds herself near a stricken fishing boat. Around a hundred people are about to drown. Rick follows maritime law and radios for help. As her request is going nowhere, she is forced to make a momentous decision.

Program Note

ER Doctor Rike is a sailing expert. After a long preparation, she embarks on a solo sailing trip to enjoy the stillness and freedom. Following a violent storm, she encounters a sinking refugee boat. In front of the massive procession of death, her agony is amplified by a refugee boy’s cry who goes on board her boat. The extreme confrontation between Rike and the boy makes the audience confront the nature of the refugee issue. Clean and solid directing and the heavy message leave a lasting impression.
