The Rest is a film about refugees who fled war and persecution and arrived in Europe, the world’s bastion of human rights, yet have not found the safe havens of their dreams. Instead, they now live in limbo within a disintegrating humanitarian aid system, no longer the center of media attention, yet unable to move forward with their lives.

Program Note

This is a documentary by Ai Weiwei, a master of contemporary art and Chinese anti-government artist, about refugees who finally arrived in Europe from various global war zones. They fled war and persecution in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, and other conflict countries, seeking refuge in France, Italy, Germany, Greece, Sweden, and Turkey. However, most of them haven’t found the safe havens of their dreams but suffer from indifference and prejudice. Weiwei goes near to them to capture their precarious lives.
