Based on director/playwright Jang Jin’s play, the film depicts the village called Dongmakgol like a utopia in the gunfire of the Korean War. There are two main axes in the film. The horizontal one shows the extreme spatial confrontation between battlefield and utopia. And the vertical one reveals the ideological confrontation between the North and the South. However, all the conflict is relieved in this untouched village. Soldiers from both sides willingly devote their lives to protect the area. The film makes the audience realize what they really have to preserve in this land. This is a very unique film in the history of Korea’s war films.
