Opening the renaissance of Korean cinema, the film is considered as the first Hollywood-style blockbuster in Korea. The film also proved the commercial potential of the issue of the division of Korea and created a boom of 'division films'. Unlike the dichotomic separation in the anti-communist films, this film describes entangled characters such as a lover and sniper, Lee Myung-hyun/Bang-hee, a peace-seeking North Korean leader, and an extremist Park Moo-young. Compared to other Korean films, its description for North Korea has quite improved. However, there remain some limitations of the times before the inter-Korean summit held in 2000.
