Wang Xiaonan, an ace student at a dancing school, performs a Korean dance at the national folk dance competition held in Beijing, China, but takes the 10th place. The following day the head of the school visits Wang to advise her to go to Pyongyang and experience the soul of the Korean dance. So, Wang visits Pyongyang. At first she behaves as she pleases and disagrees with Kim Unsun, a Korean dancer. But she is deeply moved by a Korean girl who is tender-hearted, strict with the art, and sincere in creative work. Seeing the 100,000-grand mass gymnastics and artistic performance Arirang, she finds the mental world of the Korean nation and the soul of the Korean dance. Leaving Pyongyang, Wang exchanges tacit promise with Kim, resolving to dance for their countries and people.

Program Note

 Wang Xiaonan goes on an eight-day cultural exchange trip to Pyongyang. Upon arrival, although she is supposed to learn from a North Korean dancer Kim Eun-sun, several conflicts arise because of misunderstandings. However, after they learn that Eun-sun’s mentor is, in fact, the old friend Xiaonan’s grandmother has been desperately looking for, they clear up misunderstandings and start to bond with each other. Meet in Pyongyang explores the relation between China and North Korea through a friendship between two dancers. With a theme of traditional Korean dance, the film portrays how artists awaken their creativity and recover their passion.
