In central Vietnam, there are people who still live with the memory of a brutal massacre. On every February, the villagers offer prayers with all their hearts and burn incense at various places to console the victims. They’ve called this ceremony as “Dai Han (Korea) Commemoration”. In the 1960s, South Korea fought in the Vietnam War as a US ally, insisting Korea should help to root out the communists in Vietnam. However, what they did was simple and cruel: they killed a large number of civilians. The survivors’ experience hasn’t nailed in the history instead it was treated as if it never existed. A memory of the war now has become a new war between two different memories which is “A War of Memories”.

Program Note

A documentary about civilian massacres by the Korean soldiers dispatched to Vietnam-a tragedy that took place in the central part of Vietnam in 1968. The descendants and the survivors remember the appalling history with annual ancestral rites. The veterans, now older in age, negate the massacre. A War of Memories conveys this heavy yet hot topic in a serene way. It doesn’t try to explain nor persuade. Instead, the sporadic testimonies and spaces collide, creating a tense narrative. A round of applause for the director’s courage to deal with such a difficult topic. This documentary urges us to repent on the bloody history we have caused.
