Program Note

Riadh and Nazli, a middle-class couple living in Tunisia, worry about their only son Sami who seems to struggle with depression in preparation of college entrance exams. One day, Sami leaves for Syria to join ISIS and Riadh sets out on a dangerous journey to find his son. Dear Son focuses on depicting the anger and pain of an ordinary father who cannot understand why his son has joined ISIS. Reminding us of Asghar Farhadi’s films distinguished by non-judgmental and non-excessive portrayals of characters, it reflects on the problems of identity and generation gap by looking at a series of tragic events caused by a lack of communication among family members.
