The film is based on the true story of a Russian emigrant Lillian Alling who tries to walk the long way home from New York to Russia in the 1920s. A Russian woman in her early 30s comes to New York for a new life but fails to get a job. Even worse, her visa has expired and she decides to walk from New York through Canada, Alaska to Russia. Because she can’t speak any English and doesn’t say a word in the film, her mental agony in the harsh journey remains in mystery. The film depicts the dark side of the American Dream in the vast landscape in contrast to her adversity.
